Can Breathwork Release Anxiety?

Anxiety affects millions of people daily, manifesting as tightness in the chest, racing thoughts, shallow breathing, and a constant sense of unease. While medication and therapy can play important roles, many people are searching for natural, immediate ways to regulate anxiety—and that’s where breathwork comes in.
So yes, breathwork can absolutely help release anxiety. Not only does it calm the mind, it works physiologically to regulate the nervous system and shift you out of fight-or-flight.
Let’s explore how and why it works.
How Breathwork Impacts the Nervous System
Anxiety is often rooted in autonomic dysregulation—meaning your body is stuck in sympathetic nervous system overdrive (fight, flight, or freeze). Breathwork helps regulate the autonomic nervous system by activating the parasympathetic response (rest and digest).
Here’s how:
Conscious breathing slows the heart rate, which signals safety to the brain
Extended exhales increase vagal tone and promote relaxation
Rhythmic breath patterns override stress-based shallow breathing and create rhythm in the body
Breathwork shifts brainwave states, calming the mind and easing emotional intensity
At Awakened Breath, we teach nervous-system-specific breath practices such as [Insert Technique Name] and [Insert Technique Name], which are designed to release anxious tension and bring the body back into a state of balance.
The Difference Between Managing vs. Releasing Anxiety
Many people try to manage anxiety with distractions—scrolling, eating, or numbing. Breathwork offers something different: a way to consciously feel and release the emotion from the body.
During a well-facilitated breathwork session, you may experience:
A softening of physical tension (shoulders, jaw, chest)
A drop in mental noise and inner pressure
Emotional shifts like crying, sighing, or deep calm
A sense of groundedness and relief
These are signs that your nervous system is releasing stored tension—not just mentally coping with it.
Breathwork Techniques for Anxiety Relief
Different techniques work for different nervous system states. For anxiety specifically, the goal is to calm and stabilize, not stimulate.
Here are a few go-to practices we teach at Awakened Breath:
1. Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4.Slows the heart rate, balances CO2 levels, and resets focus.
2. 3-4-6 BreathingInhale for 3, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Long exhales stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and promote deep calm.
3. Cleansing BreathA gentle rhythmic breath through the nose with open mouth exhales. Helps clear stuck energy without overactivation.
These techniques are foundational and can be practiced daily to build emotional resilience and reduce chronic stress patterns.
Why It Works When Nothing Else Does
Unlike mindset work, which tries to think your way out of anxiety, breathwork works through the body, which is where anxiety often lives. Many of our students say things like:
“I’ve done years of talk therapy, but nothing grounded me like this.”
“For the first time, I actually felt the anxiety leave my body.”
That’s because Breathwork moves energy, rather than just analyzing it.
When to Use Breathwork for Anxiety
Breathwork can be used in three key ways:
As a daily practice to build resilience and keep your baseline nervous system balanced
In the moment, when anxiety strikes, to shift quickly out of overwhelm
As part of deeper healing, to access and release the root causes of anxiety stored in the body
In our High Impact Healer training, we teach how to apply each approach—whether you’re working with clients or using it for your own healing.
Important Considerations
If you’re experiencing chronic anxiety, panic attacks, or trauma-related symptoms, it’s important to work with a trauma-informed breathwork facilitator who can help pace the experience and hold space if deeper emotions arise.
This is not about pushing through—it’s about listening to your body and choosing the right technique for where you are.
Final Thoughts
Breathwork is one of the most accessible, immediate, and effective tools for releasing anxiety and returning to presence. It doesn’t require a prescription, equipment, or years of study—just a willingness to breathe with intention.
If you’re ready to experience this work for yourself, you can either end your anxiety for good through 1-On-1 coaching with me, or if you are ready to help others overcome anxiety for good, you can join us for our upcoming High Impact Healer Training and learn to help others heal and grow!
Be Blessed!
